The Dragon Boat Festival is the traditional cultural festival popular in China and the cultural circles of Chinese characters every year in the fifth lunar month of May.
The festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Towns people jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water。
The Dragon Boat Festival, together with the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival and Mid Autumn Festival, is one of the four traditional festivals in China. The Dragon Boat Festival culture has a wide influence in the world, and some countries and regions in the world also have activities to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. In May 2006, the State Council listed it in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage; Since 2008, it has been listed as a national legal holiday. In September 2009, UNESCO officially approved its inclusion in the representative list of human intangible cultural heritage, and the Dragon Boat Festival became the first festival in China to be included in the world intangible cultural heritage.
The most important activity of this festival is the Dragon Boat races. It symbolizes people‘s attempts to rescue Qu Yuan. In the current period, these races also demonstrate the virtues of cooperation and teamwork.
Besides, the festival has also been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice).
Zong zi is made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. People who mourned the death of Qu threw Zong zi into the river to feed his ghost every year.
With the changes of the times,the memorial turns to be a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of year. People will hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house.
Although the significance of the festival might be different from the past， it still gives the observer an opportunity to glimpse a part of the rich Chinese cultural heritage.
